Josh Jung
Josh Jung Plays in spring opener
Sat, Feb 22, 2025, 7:52 AM
Jung started at third base and went 0-for-2 in Friday's spring opener against Kansas City.
Analysis: Jung had a pair of wrist surgeries in 2024 but enters Cactus League play with no limitations. He hopes this will be the first spring in four seasons that good health is on his side. Jung was delayed last spring due to a calf strain, tore his labrum in camp the previous year and suffered a stress fracture in his left foot the year before that. That doesn't include the fractured thumb he suffered midseason in 2023 and last year's wrist issues. He's been limited to 168 games of the 324 possible regular season games in his first full seasons in the majors. While the fractures can be chalked up to bad luck and Jung may not be considered injury prone, three significant fractures in a four-year window is an issue.
Nathan Eovaldi
Nathan Eovaldi Logs first spring outing
Sat, Feb 22, 2025, 7:22 AM
Eovaldi allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one over two innings in Friday's spring opener against the Royals. He also hit a batter.
Analysis: Eovaldi used the entire arsenal over the two innings, and he broke out a new two-seamer, although it was not identified as such in the Statcast box score. "I've been working on that two-seam runner," he told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. "It wasn't as great today. In the offseason, the TrackMan results were awesome." The right-hander said he felt like he was rushing all his pitches down the mound and plans to work on slowing down his mechanics in subsequent outings.
Wyatt Langford
Wyatt Langford Diagnosed with mild oblique strain
Fri, Feb 21, 2025, 10:29 AM
Langford will be held out of baseball activities for 5-to-7 days after being diagnosed with a mild oblique strain, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: For now, the Rangers are not concerned that this could affect Langford's Opening Day availability. That will depend on a smooth recovery however, which doesn't always happen with oblique injuries. Langford is looking to break out for the Rangers in 2025 after finishing strong last September with a .996 OPS, eight homers and seven stolen bases over 26 contests.
Josh Jung
Josh Jung No limitations
Thu, Feb 20, 2025, 7:07 PM
Jung (wrist) has no physical limitations to start spring training, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Jung had a pair of wrist surgeries in 2024 and was limited to only 188 plate appearances as a result. He reported that he was fully recovered in early January, but that has now been confirmed by his participation in baseball activity early in camp as Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reported that Jung participated in batting practice this week.
Adolis Garcia
Adolis Garcia Unveils new swing
Thu, Feb 20, 2025, 8:35 AM
Garcia (knee) reworked his swing during the offseason, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The outfielder is coming off a 2024 season during which he posted career lows in average (.224) and OPS (.684). As such, Garcia worked to remove a loop at the top of swing and generally tighten it up. Texas manager Bruce Bochy described the swing as "quieter" and said Garcia is being more direct to the ball. Bochy also noted the slugger's gait and spring while running the bases, which indicates the patella injury sustained late in 2024 will not be an issue when the Rangers begin Cactus League games.
Joc Pederson
Joc Pederson Back in camp after illness
Wed, Feb 19, 2025, 10:53 AM
Pederson (illness) returned to Rangers camp Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Pederson was away from the club for a few days while battling the flu, but he's now recovered and ready to resume workouts. The 32-year-old's first Cactus League game might be delayed a bit since he's a tad behind, but he will have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day.
Robert Garcia
Robert Garcia Completes side session
Tue, Feb 18, 2025, 4:33 PM
Garcia (forearm) tossed a bullpen session Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Garcia is slightly behind the Rangers' healthy relievers in camp while he contends with forearm nerve irritation, but he doesn't appear at much risk of missing out on a spot in the Opening Day roster, provided he steers clear of setbacks for the remainder of spring training. He likely won't be available for the Rangers' three Cactus League games over the weekend but could be ready to make his spring debut at some point next week.
Evan Carter
Evan Carter Health to be monitored closely
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 7:58 PM
The Rangers are expected to monitor Carter's back closely throughout the 2025 season, though he's been reluctant to reveal his exact diagnosis, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Carter made it clear that discussing the back injury isn't exactly his favorite topic. However, he noted that the issue could be considered chronic inflammation since it's flared up in two of his last three seasons. "I kind of want to keep it personal," said Carter when asked about his diagnosis. "It's personal to me and we're going to keep it that way. I can't change it. It's a part of me now, but we've got a plan." This update feels a bit ominous after it was previously reported that he'd enter spring training without any restrictions, as it sounds as though the back injury could flare up at various points during the year. Manager Bruce Bochy noted that the level of concern is low entering camp, but the team plans to monitor the 22-year-old closely, which could mean regular rest days.
Luke Jackson
Luke Jackson Goes to Texas on one-year deal
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 1:54 PM
The Rangers signed Jackson to a one-year, $1.5 million contract Monday.
Analysis: It's a homecoming of sorts for Jackson, who was drafted by the Rangers and reached the majors for the first time with them. The 33-year-old posted a 5.09 ERA over 52 regular-season appearances with San Francisco and Atlanta in 2024 but did strike out 59 over 53 innings. Jackson should fill a middle relief role.
Josh Sborz
Josh Sborz Sent to 60-day IL
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 1:50 PM
The Rangers placed Sborz (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list Monday.
Analysis: The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Luke Jackson, whom the club signed to a one-year deal. Sborz underwent surgery on his right shoulder in mid-November and had already been expected to miss the first couple of months of the 2025 season, so his move to the 60-day IL won't alter his timeline for a return.
Corey Seager
Corey Seager Ready to go for spring
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 12:27 PM
Seager (hip/sports hernia) reported to spring training Monday and isn't expected to face any restrictions during camp.
Analysis: The Rangers shut Seager down for the season last September after placing him on the 60-day injured list due to hip soreness, and he was diagnosed with a sports hernia later that month that required surgery. After a roughly two-month rehab program following his sports hernia surgery, Seager was cleared for baseball activities over the winter and appears to have had a relatively normal offseason. While durability remains an annual concern, the 30-year-old shortstop has proven himself to be a four-category standout whenever he's on the field.
Kumar Rocker
Kumar Rocker May miss out on rotation spot
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 11:39 AM
Rocker doesn't project to make the Rangers rotation if the five starters ahead of him are healthy, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: With Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Cody Bradford and Tyler Mahle all healthy, Landry expects Rocker to begin the year at Triple-A as a depth option. Of course, those five starters may not all remain healthy between now and Opening Day, and Rocker has little to prove on the farm, so he should still make the majority of his 2025 appearances in the big leagues.
David Buchanan
David Buchanan Out with sprained ankle
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 11:03 AM
Buchanan will be sidelined for about a week after badly spraining his left ankle during a fielding drill, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: The injury shouldn't have any long-term ramifications, but Buchanan was already a longshot for a roster spot, and the injury won't help his case. The 35-year-old made one big-league appearance with the Reds in 2024, which marked his first MLB action since 2015.
Joc Pederson
Joc Pederson Falls ill
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 11:00 AM
Pederson will be away from Rangers camp for a few days while battling the flu, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: The 32-year-old will get a bit of a late start to spring training, but his bout with the illness shouldn't prevent him from being ready to go for Opening Day. Pederson is slated to serve as Texas' designated hitter against right-handed pitching this season.
Emiliano Teodo
Emiliano Teodo Back to throwing
Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 11:54 AM
Teodo (thumb) threw a bullpen session Sunday with no apparent issues, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: The right-hander was pulled from his bullpen session Saturday due to thumb soreness, but the fact he returned to throwing a day later indicates it wasn't a serious concern. Teodo is one of the organization's top prospects and posted a 1.98 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 110:50 K:BB across 86.1 innings at the Double-A level last year.
Robert Garcia
Robert Garcia Bullpen on tap
Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 11:05 AM
Garcia (forearm) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The left-hander was shut down from throwing for a few days after reporting to camp with nerve irritation in his left forearm, but he's poised to get back on the mound Tuesday. Assuming Garcia doesn't experience a recurrence of the injury, he should have plenty of time to be fully built up for Opening Day.
Joe Barlow
Joe Barlow Back with Texas
Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 9:45 AM
Barlow agreed to a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Sunday that includes an invite to big-league camp.
Analysis: The right-hander recorded 24 saves with a 2.81 ERA across the 2021 and 2022 campaigns for the Rangers, but he had a 4.66 ERA in 13 outings during 2023 before being designated for assignment, and he hasn't pitched in the majors since. Barlow could earn a spot in Texas' bullpen with a strong showing during spring training but likely won't fill more than a middle-relief role.
Jon Gray
Jon Gray Preparing as starter
Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 8:41 AM
Texas manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that the team is thinking of Gray as a starter, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Recent rumors and reports suggested the Rangers are considering using Gray as a closer.
Analysis: Gray confirmed that he hasn't been approached by anyone in the organization about the possibility of being a closer or reliever, although the pitcher said he'd do whatever is best for the club. "[Gray closing], it's not in our focus right now," Bochy said. "During the season, as always, you make adjustments. I'm not saying that we plan on doing it, but you've got to figure ways to make a team better." The 33-year-old right-hander, who spent three separate occasions on the injured list in 2024, was good out of the bullpen in a small sample size. Gray allowed one run across 5.2 relief innings against the Astros and Diamondbacks on the way to Texas winning the World Series in 2023.
Jacob deGrom
Jacob deGrom Throws first session at camp
Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 8:28 AM
DeGrom threw a bullpen session Saturday, his first since the start of training camp, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: DeGrom entered camp healthy after dealing with a second Tommy John elbow surgery that wiped out much of 2023 and 2024. The right-hander made three starts last September and recorded a 1.69 ERA over 10.2 innings. A healthy deGrom is key for the Rangers, who have won seven of the pitcher's nine starts over the last two seasons.
Emiliano Teodo
Emiliano Teodo Managing sore thumb
Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 2:22 PM
Teodo was pulled from his bullpen session Saturday due to right thumb soreness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Rangers have marked Teodo as day-to-day, so the injury doesn't seem to be anything worthy of major concern. The 24-year-old righty earned a spot on Texas' 40-man roster this winter after turning in a 1.98 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 86.1 innings at Double-A Frisco. He'll likely be bumped up to Triple-A Round Rock for the start of the 2025 campaign, and his MLB debut may not be far away if he continues to dominate in the minors.
